The thrilling performances of Matthew McConaughey (left) and Ryan Phillippe in the courtroom drama The Lincoln Lawyer make for a worthwhile trip to the cinema. Picture:

It’s been a long time since I watched a Matthew McConaughey movie. He’s a versatile and talented actor, but he’s made some awful career decisions of late… Anybody remember Surfer Dude? I sat through the entire 85 minutes. From the beginning to the end. Halfway through it, I found myself wondering whether the weed they were smoking was real! McConaughey’s latest endeavour, The Lincoln Lawyer, is a great courtroom drama that gives the chiselled Texan a chance to shine again. Continue reading

Black Swan: Ballet shoes, blood and a bold performance from Natalie Portman

Picture of Natalie Portman and Vincent Cassel in the movie Black Swan
Natalie Portman and Vincent Cassel have great chemistry on screen in Darren Aronofsky’s stunning Black Swan. Picture:

I’ve admired Natalie Portman’s acting ability since I first saw her in The Professional opposite Jean Reno. I think she was 12 years old at the time. The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of our favourite places to hang out during the summer months in Cape Town. We usually plan our trips there to coincide with the last Sunday of the month so we can also explore the craft market which is held opposite the garden. Continue reading

Blue Valentine: The light and dark moments of intimacy

Picture of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams in the movie Blue Valentine
Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) share a tender moment during the early days of their doomed love affair. Picture:

Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) and multi-talented actor Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) deliver two of the best performances you’ll see on screen this year in Blue Valentine. That’s my opinion – and I can’t understand why so many reviewers have written it off as just another cautionary tale about the perils of love when it’s so much more than that. Continue reading
