I first discovered the music of Ray LaMontagne through the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. His songs were featured extensively in the third season and I downloaded all of his albums soon after hearing Shelter, from the debut CD Trouble. I like his voice, with its raspy edge and country essence. But it was his lyrics – poetic, soulful and often melancholy – that got me hooked.
Everybody needs shelter – from the elements, from the hurt, from the pain, from the harsh realities of this world. Some are lucky enough to find it in the arms of friends and lovers; others go through their whole lives without feeling the warmth of a tender embrace. Every time I listen to this song, I am reminded of the special people in my life and how they shelter me.
